2006 SJI Interns

Story posted on Nov. 8, 2005

Once again, it's Sports Journalism Institute intern time.

If you would like an intern at your paper for the summer of 2006, please e-mail: Sandy Rosenbush (sandy_rosenbush@simail.com) or Leon Carter (lcarter@edit.nydailynews.com).

Slots are already filling up, so please don't delay. If you inquired last summer but never follwed up with us, now is the time to do so. Even if you did follow up, we'd like to just hear a quick "I'm in" or "budget's cut, I'm out" now so we can finalize the list. And if you never spoke up but want an intern, it's definitely now or never for the Class of 2006.

Remember, your paper is responsible for the intern's salary (whatever you'd normally pay an intern or beginning reporter, we don't set the salary) and for helping him or her find housing. You also need to be sure he or she gets to your town; often we can work something out where the intern drives or we place someone who is in your region but it could cost you a plane ticket if the student is from several states away.

Also note that this year, with our boot camp at the Poynter Institute, the interns will be ready to start June 12 and the program ends Aug. 4. Usually the student can stay longer if the paper desires, and often an earlier start can also be worked out.

The following papers have expressed strong interest and are tentatively on the list for a 2006 intern (We'd still like to hear from editors at these papers just to confirm you are definite):

Colorado Springs Gazette
Columbus (Ga.) Ledger-Enquirer
Denver Post
Des Moines Register
Houston Chronicle
Minneapolis Star Tribune
Salt Lake City Tribune
San Francisco Chronicle
Tampa Tribune
Wilmington News-Journal
