Riverside's Mays takes buyout

She was only female black sports editor in country

Story posted on Jan. 23, 2009

Patricia Mays

Patricia Mays, the lone female black sports editor in the country, has left the business.

Mays accepted a buyout offer from The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, Calif., late in 2008. The buyout offer was extended to all employees of A.H. Belo, which owns The P-E.

"She was a terrific word editor, a great mentor to our staff," said assistant managing Editor Dave Ammenheuser.

Mays joined the Press-Enterprise in 2005 as Deputy Sports Editor. She came to The P-E after an extensive career with The Associated Press, incluiding working in the New York City bureau.

She was promoted to Sports Editor in January 2007 when Ammenheuser was promoted to Assistant Managing Editor.

With her departure, Ammenheuser again takes over the day-to-day management of the print and Web sections.
