SPORTS MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

Scott Kendrick

The News-Herald (Willoughby, Ohio)

Scott Kendrick
Position: Sports editor

Age: 32

College: Ohio State, 1993

Why SMI? To benefit from the collective experience of sports editor around the country and to broaden my horizons.

Personal athletic highlight: Made 70-foot putt to put my team in the money in a scramble golf outing.

Journalism highlight: Covered Ohio State's Elite Eight game against Michigan in the 1992 NCAA Tournament.

Journalism lowlight: The day the Cleveland Plain Dealer scooped our paper in its own contest to name the minor league baseball team in our community.

Last book read: The DaVinci Code.

Best advice you ever received: Keep the lines of communication open with your staff.

Journalism role model: Dave Campbell of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, a sports editor at a mid-sized suburban paper who now oversees high school coverage in Cleveland.

Dream job: Managing editor of Sports Illustrated.

Fun fact: As a high school senior, I worked as a cook at Canton-Akron Indians minor-league baseball games. Hot dogs were my specialty.
