The Sioux City Journal, an innovative 40,000 circulation daily newspaper in Northwest Iowa, is looking for an editor to help guide our sports department.
The right candidate will be a talented journalist with a demonstrated ability to write and report, design vibrant, reader-friendly pages, write clear and compelling headlines and be a ruthless editor of copy. You must be able to manage an experienced group of full-time sportswriters and part-time staffers, help execute a series of new online sports initiatives and be able to work collaboratively with the other members of our newsroom management team. The Managing Editor-Sports will work closely with our Sports Editor to establish the overall philosophy of our section but ultimately will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the department.
Our small but talented sports staff covers prep sports in the tri-state area – Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. We also cover four competitive NAIA colleges, a Division I university (University of South Dakota) and three minor league professional teams (hockey, indoor football, baseball).
We offer an exciting environment in which to continue to grow as a journalist and leader. We've won multiple national and state awards for our journalism. Most recently, our Web site was named the Community Web Site of the Year by the Suburban Newspaper Association.
To learn more about our company or to apply, please log onto www.siouxcityjournal.com and click on 'Home' 'Contact Us' and then 'Careers at Sioux City Journal' for a listing of our open positions. Please include a cover letter and resume with salary history. Please e-mail work samples and salary history to mitchpugh@siouxcityjournal.com. No phone calls, please. Candidates chosen for an interview will be contacted by phone.
We are a drug-free workplace and all applicants considered for employment must pass a post-offer drug screen and background check prior to commencing employment.
