APRIL 2007 ISSUE

Tucson (Ariz.) Citizen

Best daily section – under 40,000

Story posted on April 15, 2007

As far as our section, we worked hard on:

■ Saturday high school football tab, which we started up in 2006 to run more game photos and take advantage of our later deadline (2 a.m.). The readers liked it, and we're hoping to sell some ads for next season to expand it from eight pages to 10 or 12.

■ Spring training pullout: Because we have three teams in Tucson (D'backs, White Sox and Rockies), we gave bonus coverage every Friday during March, led by an enterprise piece. Having it in the regular section, instead of pre-print, allowed us to be more timely.

■ College football extra: We decided to do our previews on Friday, so readers could soak up all the information the day before. The four-page "wrap" was anchored by an enterprise story on University of Arizona or Pac-10 football, and included a breakdown of the game on Page 2 with stats and graphics. The wrap was not pre-print, which allowed us flexibility.

■ Here's a HUGE tip for making the PDF download process easier: Instead of clicking on the link to open the PDF from the browser, simply put your cursor over the link and right click and choose either "Save Target As..." (in Microsoft's Internet Explorer) or "Save Target Link As..." (in Netscape and Mozilla Firefox). What this will do is download the PDF to your harddrive. Once it's on your harddrive, it is much easier and faster to open and print.
