We believe our franchise is our high school sports coverage. We approach each edition with that in mind. We try to find ways to tell the routine in a unique and different way, then depend heavily on our designers to pull it off. Readers have come to expect great high school coverage from us; we try to surprise them either with our presentation of the information or a new twist on an old concept.

Each Thursday throughout the high school season, we publish a four-page wraparound. During the football season, we call it First Down; at other times of the year, we call it Varsity. For one of our Varsity sections, one of writers came up with the idea of examining the life of a high school catcher. We brainstormed with several members of our department, then brought in the photo and graphics department for their ideas. The result was a unique offering called Life Behind the Mask. For the cover shot, our photographer literally put his camera behind a catcher's mask and took a picture. Then we combined an image of a pitcher and a baseball to give it this unique look. We also diagrammed all the injuries incurred by a veteran high school catcher in our area.

Another section we are proud of is an expanded Varsity. One of our local high school teams was about to win its second straight big-school title, thus, with advertising's support, we increased the size of our section to tell a more complete story. We asked ourselves, is this the best team ever in Ohio high school basketball history? We then used that question as the centerpiece graphic element of the section. We also included point-counterpoint columns on who is the best player our area has seen. And inside, we took a full page to give readers a five-minute guide to the state basketball tournament.

A few weeks later, we tried to come up with a different way of displaying our all-county basketball teams. We based our entire presentation on a night with the stars; we posed our high school player of the year, dressed in a suit, at a classic car museum. Then we used items you might see at a pre-Oscar party.

We find it important to consult as many members of our staff as possible for their input, even if they are not involved in the project. Some of the best ideas we have presented have come from their recommendations.

■ Here's a HUGE tip for making the PDF download process easier: Instead of clicking on the link to open the PDF from the browser, simply put your cursor over the link and right click and choose either "Save Target As..." (in Microsoft's Internet Explorer) or "Save Target Link As..." (in Netscape and Mozilla Firefox). What this will do is download the PDF to your harddrive. Once it's on your harddrive, it is much easier and faster to open and print.
