It's important to understand the tone of a story before you begin to design a page. Once you get the mood of the piece, I think the right headline treatment and images fall into place. For instance, we actually had an entirely different cover done for the Jerome Bettis story. The original cover, which we ended up using inside, was a collection of images that showed Bettis's different facial expressions.
All of the photos were great, but something just didn't feel right to the designer. Once he read the story, he decided on the one cover image because he thought it best illustrated the warmth and kindness of Bettis detailed in the piece.
The total approach – content, design and information packaging – go into our special sections. We work with advertising for some open pages so we can display our material. A lot of our special section work is done at conception, but we also build in flexibility for the section designer and writers should certain situations arise. That's why sometimes our overall plan is implemented, but the details often change.

■ Here's a HUGE tip for making the PDF download process easier: Instead of clicking on the link to open the PDF from the browser, simply put your cursor over the link and right click and choose either "Save Target As..." (in Microsoft's Internet Explorer) or "Save Target Link As..." (in Netscape and Mozilla Firefox). What this will do is download the PDF to your harddrive. Once it's on your harddrive, it is much easier and faster to open and print.
