Committee chairs
▶ COMMISSIONERS: Michael Anastasi and Tom Jolly Works with APSE president to help maintain contact with commissioners and chief executives of major sporting leagues. Helps organize APSE's annual commissioner meetings in New York. Also, help Legal Affairs Committee with issues involving credentialing. Contacts:
• • • ▶ CONTEST and CRITIQUE: Garry D. Howard and Celeste Williams Helps President set up judging panels for the contest, arrange for catchers of contest entries, and assists chair in assembling entries and preparing lists. Also, work with newspapers and media companies on critiques of work. Contacts:
• • • ▶ CONVENTION: Lynn Hoppes and Jerry Micco Attends the winter meeting to discuss and determine sessions for the conventions. Helps coordinate plans for a convention program that reflects activities of APSE committees and provides workshops and general sessions of relevance and interest to members of papers and media companies of all sizes. • • • ▶ DIVERSITY and SJI: Jorge Rojas and Leon Carter Working with the President, help plan and produce a workshop or general session for the national convention. Explore potential programs for expanding management opportunities for minorities and women. Help serve as liaison between APSE and NABJ, NAHJ, NAJA, AAJA and AWSM. Work with the program for SJI and implement a plan for bringing several students to the national convention. Contacts:
• • • ▶ FUTURES and INTERNET: Joe Sullivan The Futures Committee advises the Executive Committee as well as APSE membership on issues concerning the future of the organization. Anything from streamlining how APSE operates to how to grow revenue for the organization comes under its jurisdiction. The focus of this group will emphasis the internet and contests. Contact:
• • • ▶ LEGAL AFFAIRS and ETHICS: John Cherwa Working with the President, (1) establish contact with appropriate writers groups and obtain directories of members; (2) serve as liaison between APSE and writers groups; (3) produce stories for the online version of the Newsletter. Also, look into the bylaws of the organization and make appropriate requests for changes. Also, look into our ethics policy and make revisions. Contact:
• • • ▶ MENTORSHIP and OUTREACH: Glenn Schwarz and Ruben Luna Helps produce online Newsletter stories that contain issues helpful to sports editors of small and medium-size news newspapers; works with APSE president and third vice-president to organize convention workshops and general sessions that appeal to small-paper editors; works with region chairs to plan at least one session at each regional meeting geared for editors of small papers. Also, work with the President on increasing membership of the organization and create a formal mentorship program. Contacts:
• • • ▶ NEWSLETTER: Tim Wheatley Helps produce stories for the online Newsletter; maintains a diverse story selection; covers news of APSE and the newspaper industry as it relates to sports departments; and working with the chair, maintains close contact with other committees that should be producing Newsletter stories. • • • ▶ OLYMPICS: Roy Hewitt Working with President, updates members on Olympics issues with Newsletter stories and works with the USOC in an advisory capacity on credentials. Work with the Associated Press on coverage plans. Contact:
• • • ▶ REGIONS: Doug Roberson Look into the future of the regions and thoughts on realignment. Make sure the regions hold meetings and work with the Newsletter Committee on story assignments and completions. Contact:
