What advice do you have for young sports editors?
You really need to pace yourself, find balance in your life — although that might be impossible — and surround yourself with really good, talented, reliable people.
Which sport has the best athletes?
National Basketball Association.
What's your favorite sport?
Major League Baseball. I'm a Red Sox diehard.
What's the most impressive sports record?
I would say it's Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak. ... What else is amazing is Orel Hershiser's shutout streak (59 innings in 1988).
What's your favorite sports book?
The Boys of Summer and anything written by Roger Kahn.
Who was your favorite athlete when you were a kid?
Carl Yastrzemski.
What was your first job?
Paper boy for the Providence Evening Bulletin. I got into newspapers at very early age. I had to be 10 or 11.
What's the best part of living in Minneapolis?
Two things: The fabulous sports market and 2) the miles and miles of bike trails. It's a great place to bike.
The worst part?
Winter. It's absolutely dreadful. When people ask my wife and I how long we've been here, we answer by the number of winters we've been here: We've been here six winters.
What would we be surprised to learn about Minnesota?
Despite the weather, it's a wonderful place to raise a family: good schools, good values, good people.
What's the best thing about being a sports editor?
Helping set the agenda for delivering news to the market. It's certainly not the hours.
Are the Red Sox going to do it this year?
I don't think so. I'm pessimistic. Like a true Red Sox fan.
