THIRD VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

Mark Conley

Santa Cruz Sentinel

Candidate bios: Greg BrownellJason CarrisMark Conley

Mark Conley
Background: Covered preps, outdoors and surfing for the Santa Cruz Sentinel and Marin Independent Journal in Northern California before taking a break to help launch a golf magazine in San Francisco. Returned to Santa Cruz as Sports Editor in 2002.

APSE experience: Attended annual convention in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Attended West Region meetings in 2002, 2003 — taking part in panel discussion on ethics in 2003. Chosen for first Sports Management Institute program this past spring.

Objectives: Continuing to find ways to reach out to papers in the under-40,000 circulation. There are great benefits to being involved with the organization, but too few small newspapers can afford to be involved. We should offer discounts on registration fees and set up a room-share program to bring costs down for the national conference. But, more importantly, we should seek to strengthen the organization at the regional roots, offering more mentorship opportunities through critiques and informal drive-in workshops that would appeal to editors of small papers. Making the workshop materials from the national conference available on-line was a great first step this year toward reaching out to the smaller papers that couldn't attend. We should also keep in mind the needs of small paper editors when doing contest critiques.
