THIRD VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

Jason Carris

The Daily Journal (Vineland, N.J.)

Candidate bios: Greg BrownellJason CarrisMark Conley

Jason Carris
Background: Began journalism career in high school, working as a part-time preps writer for the Vidette Messenger in Valparaiso, Ind. While attending Oral Roberts University, served as a part-timer and preps correspondent for the Tulsa World. First sports editor position was at the twice-weekly Bristow (Okla.) News. Joined the Tulsa Business Journal as a small business/telecommunications writer in 1995. Joined The Daily Journal as Assistant City Editor in 1997. Became Night News Editor in 1998. Became Sports Editor in 1999. Became Deputy Managing Editor/Special Projects in 2003.

APSE involvement: Joined APSE in 2003. Attended 2003 drive-in workshop in Bristol, Conn. Attended APSE conventions in 2003 and 2004. Active member of Mid-Atlantic Region.

Objectives: Outreach is my No. 1 goal. I think the only way APSE is going to grow is through a pro-active membership drive. Many sports editors are new on the job, and many are unaware this organization exists.

No. 2, I think APSE should assume some of the responsibility for developing the next generation of sports editors. We need to stress the importance of mentoring.

No. 3, I think the third vice president should work diligently to increase the involvement of smaller newspapers in APSE.
