THE VIRGIAN-PILOT

The Virginian-Pilot has launched a recruiting database of the top 50 recruits from the area. The database ranks the areas best high school players, provides information on college choices and includes video. This was a major undertaking for The Pilot, requiring a tremendous amount of work from staff reporter Larry Rubama.

GREENSBORO NEWS & RECORD

The (Greensboro, N.C.) News & Record's summer intern, recent North Carolina graduate Jesse Baumgartner, left early to take a position at the Lewiston (Idaho) Tribune, where he will cover high schools and colleges.

Also, the paper's reporting of eligibility questions surrounding some student-athletes at Northern Guilford High School resulted in the school vacating its 3-A state boys basketball championship, as well as all its victories during the 2008-09 school year in varsity baseball, varsity wrestling and junior varsity softball. Guilford County Schools is expected to release the final results of its investigation early next week.

USA Today is rolled an e-edition on Aug. 3. It is a copy of the newspaper, sent by e-mail to subscribers, who can page through it like a newspaper. It will also have embedded video and also give readers the chance to click on a story and then e-mail to others. Best news of all for sports fans: it will be a final edition of the paper so readers can get ALL the scores and news missing from our ever earlier first edition.

BRISTOL HERALD COURIER

Bristol (Va.) Herald Courier former assistant sports editor Brian T. Smith took second place for breaking news in the recent Tennessee Sports Writers Association contest. It was the same story on NASCAR rookie driver Joey Logano joining the Joe Gibbs Racing team that placed second in the APSE contest. Smith also took second in the TSWA contest for investigative reporting for his project on East Tennessee State University's declining ticket sales since joining the Atlantic Sun Conference. Allen Gregory took third in the TSWA contest for outdoors writing.

FAYETTEVILLE OBSERVER

Assistant Sports Editor Thomas Pope was honored for 30 years working at the paper in a ceremony earlier this summer.

KNOXVILLE NEWS SENTINEL

The Knoxville News Sentinel received first-place awards for the best daily section and best special section in the Tennessee Sportswriters Association annual writing contest.

Three News Sentinel sportswriters received first-place awards in Division I. Sports editor John Adams won first place in column writing, Drew Edwards was first in news writing, and Dan Fleser was first in headline writing.

Adams also was second in event writing and third in headline writing. Mike Strange was second in the sportwriter of the year category and was third in feature writing, event writing and tied for third in column writing. David Goddard was second for individual layout.

Former outdoors editor Bob Hodge was second in best outdoor writing and former sports writer Roland Julian was second in headline writing.
