REGION REPORTS
Mid-Atlantic region meeting hotel reservation deadline is fast approaching

Story posted on Oct. 22, 2008

The Mid-Atlantic Region meeting at Penn State University is Dec. 1, but room reservations need to be made by Oct. 31 to get the best rate.

The room cost is $79 per night. Call 800-233-7505 to make reservations or go online. Web reservations: www.pshs.psu.edu. We have both nights, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, so if someone wants to stay two nights, they can do so at that price. Don't ask for the APSE rate because that is actually higher ($89). Just take the regular rate. We recommend you make reservations by Oct. 31. After that, rates could increase or rooms might not be available. Check in is at 3 p.m. and checkout is noon.

Conference cost to cover meal is still $25.

The meeting agenda is still being finalized but there will be a copy editing seminar and a reverse panel discussion with four or five PSU journalism students. Questions go from the panel out rather than the audience in. Malcolm Moran would have other students in the room, but the ones in the front would be able to ask about the state of the industry, trends in hiring, the importance of multi-media experience, and other issues.

For more information on the meeting, contact Keith Kaeppel at The Allentown Morning Call at kkaeppel@mcall.com When the meeting schedule is finalized, it will be posted on the APSE website.

GREAT PLAINS

The Columbia Missourian and the Kansas City Star were named best sports sections of 2007 in their classifications in the Missouri Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest, the winners of which were announced in September during the MPA's annual convention. The Columbia Missourian placed first in Class 1 with the Independence/Blue Springs Examiner in second place.

The Kansas City Star won in Class 2 with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in second.

Other first-place winners from APSE member papers: The St. Louis Post-Dispatch won first place in Class 2 best sports news story or package for its coverage of the death of Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock; the Southeast Missourian also won in Class 2 for best sports photo, a reaction shot from a girls basketball state playoff game; Toby Carrig of the Southeast Missourian won for best sports news story or package in Class 1 for coverage of the NCAA investigation into Southeast Missouri State women's basketball; J. Brady McCullough of the Kansas City Star won for best feature in Class 2 with his analysis of "The Tiger Effect" on golf; and Joe Posnanski of the Kansas City Star was first in best sports columnist.

Sports editors should direct interesting news at their papers to their region chairs. The chairs send their reports to Doug Roberson, College Editor at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, who compiles the newsletter story.
