NEWSLETTER FOR JUNE 2008
Chris Stephens: So, for those of you who follow the sports world very closely, you've likely heard of 'The Pitch' in Georgia High School baseball. As the associate sports editor for the Daily Tribune News in Cartersville, Ga., I was covering the game. (June 27)
Bob Dietz: Even if you firmly believe that politics and sports shouldn't mix, you might have a hard time ignoring the conditions for reporters covering the Beijing Olympics. As the Games get closer, China keeps getting tougher on the journalists who will be reporting from Beijing and the six other cities which will host Olympic events. (June 20)
Jackie Friedman: Tim Wheatley, the assistant managing editor/sports at the Baltimore Sun, has won the nomination for APSE second vice president, and he steps into the position with a head full of ideas. The primary role of the second vice president is the APSE newsletter, which Wheatley hopes will be even more constantly updated by many contributors during his time at the helm. (June 20)
Mike Fannin: The clock is ticking furiously over my head today as I scratch together my final column as an APSE officer. In just a week, Lynn Hoppes will step in as president, and let's be honest, that's good news for all of us. There's one last domino that needs to be knocked down before I exit stage left: Contest change as it relates to the smaller circulation papers. In my final act, I'm rewriting the script a little. (June 19)
Bryce Miller: More than a year ago, The Des Moines Register began discussing June 2008 and the events descending on central Iowa. We were ready for a flood of sports coverage. What we hadn't anticipated, though, was a flood of real and life-affecting proportions that stretched far beyond the realm of sports cliché.
