The Mid-Atlantic Region has new leadership and has plans in the works for the Region meeting at Penn State on Dec. 1.
Because Jason Carris, the former chairperson, is no longer employed by a newspaper, the current vice chair, Keith Kaeppel of The Morning Call, was promoted to chairperson for the next calendar year, the remaining portion of Carris' time. Judy Connelly of the Scranton Times and Tribune, was unanimously voted in as the new vice chair. These actions were taken when seven region representatives met at the APSE national convention in Minneapolis.
The next regional meeting is set for Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, once again at the Penn Stater Conference Center in State College. Kaeppel and Connelly will be setting the agenda for that day. Jerry Micco of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette is assisting with the hotel arrangements.
Micco also took the opportunity to brief us on the planning for the 2009 convention June 24-27 in Pittsburgh. Because the convention is in the Mid-Atlantic Region, member papers will be approached for sponsorship money.
Discussions on new business:
■ John Quinn of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that he will be checking with his contacts at COSIDA about polling their players on interest in working with or for our newspapers.
■ Various members voiced their concern that the SJI students are no longer attend the national conventions.
■ Connelly volunteered to collect the information from our region papers if, or maybe more accurately, when they begin to have access issues with sports teams – pro, collegiate or scholastic. Please e-mail her with issues at jconnelly@timesshamrock.com.
The meeting was attended by Kaeppel, Connelly, Micco, Quinn, Tim Wheatley of the Baltimore Sun, Tom Peterson of KRT, and John Medeiros or the Press Enterprise.
