NEWSLETTER FOR OCTOBER 2007

Joe Sullivan: The Boston Globe sports editor describes how the newspaper covered the successes of the Boston Red Sox, Boston College and the New England Patriots over a 12-day span from Oct. 24-Nov. 4. (Nov. 8)

Joe Sullivan: The APSE Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regions will be conducting co-fall meetings at the "new" New York Times Building on Monday, Nov. 12, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (Oct. 25)

Mike Fannin: When sports journalists are in such high demand, as they are with the Internet, it's a good thing for our business. And we need some good news right now. Here's another way to look at it: Has there ever been a better indicator that content is still king? What we do is valuable – and it will remain a commodity in the future. (Oct. 10)

Toby Carrig: Sandy Keenan joined The New York Times as deputy sports editor in September. Keenan has been the assistant managing editor for investigations and enterprise at Newsday. Plus moves from the Great Lakes, Great Plains, Northwest, Southeast and West regions. (Oct. 10)

Garry D. Howard: Today is a new day in daily journalism. And if you aren't careful, the entire metamorphoses will pass you by, leaving you and your newspaper in a hole from which you may never recover. We're talking about the age of the Internet and the continuation of our daily sports sections. (Oct. 8)

Nick Mathews: The Atlantic Coast is holding another APSE regional contest with two goals. The first is to help us recognize good work in our area and, second, to help us prepare for the national APSE contest later in the year. (Oct. 7)

D. Orlando Ledbetter: John Grisham is somewhere kicking himself. Even the greatest legal-drama writer of our time could not have come up with a plot so surreal. You could just picture him with his legal pad, scribbling out the facts – all of which turned out to be vivid, true and very real – about the dog fighting and exploits of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and his Bad Newz Kennels posse. (Oct. 6)

Lynn Hoppes: All the information you need for the APSE Judging Contest, to be held Feb. 23-27 in Kissimmee, Fla. Included are section and writing rules, mandatory dates (one date is set, the other is TBA) and how you can be a judge. (Oct. 4)
