AUGUST 2007 ISSUE
HOW WE DID IT — NBA FINALS

Another banner year in San Antonio

By STEVE QUINTANA
San Antonia Express-News

Story posted on Aug. 7, 2007

For the printed edition, we published a daily special section (see pdfs below) during the Finals. The section was 6-10 pages and included:

      ■ "Four for Four" a special header at the top of the section that explained the Spurs needed four victories for their fourth title. With each victory, another of the letters in F-O-U-R turned gold to match the trophy.

      ■ "Beyond the Game" a special Page 2 by Tim Griffin that focused on celebrities, TV hype and off-the-court news.

      ■ "Review/Preview" by NBA writer Mike Monroe. This page, heavy on analysis and graphics, looked back at the previous game and looked ahead to the next game.

      ■ "Lead Tracker" and "Shooting Analysis" were graphics done on game nights that ran next to the box score.

      ■ "Memories" a photo act that ran in full color on the back page each game night.

We had seven sports reporters and two columnists at each game, home and away.

We published a four-page stadium edition for the Game 4 clincher, and sold all 150,000 copies, even though the Spurs clinched on the road. We published a six-page parade edition for the city-wide victory celebration on the Sunday after the final game, and then followed with a 10-page commemorative edition one week after the final game.

And the sports department also produced an 80-page commemorative book. This was completed and sent to the printer 15 hours after the final buzzer and was on the street in time for the victory parade. The book sold for $14.99 ($5 off if you clipped a coupon out of the paper).

For the Web, we produced three different blogs:

      ■ "Spurs at the Moment" – covered practice, shoot arounds and pregame notes.

      ■ "Courtside" – featured live game updates on game days and focused on what other media were saying about the series on off days.

      ■ "Sean Elliott" – former Spur wrote about what he was seeing during the series.

We also linked to fan blogs, we had fans share their spirit photos and video with us, and of course we invited them to talk to each other in our Spurs forum.
