That's an appropriate description for collecting APSE dues.

More than 735 dues notices were sent out on Sept. 1. The mailing cost APSE more than $500, including postage, copying, envelopes and stationary.

The response?

Just under 55 percent of last year's members have returned dues and information forms.

That means another mailing to 300 members and, if history is an indication, a third mailing for those who buried their notice on a pile on their desk.

Jan. 1 is the absolute deadline for receiving dues and information forms.

If they aren't in by then, the paper or member will not be included in the 2007 directory.

Perhaps more important to some is that the paper will not be eligible for the contest. At least one person from a paper must have paid dues for the paper to be eligible.

A second dues mailing went out Oct. 23.
