Who's in charge: The NCAA oversees credentialing for championship events. The biggest events are handled directly by the NCAA; others are handled by local media coordinators.

How to apply: Sports Information Directors of the schools you cover should have information. Contact information for each event's media coordinator also may be found at www.ncaa.org under "media and events," then "press room," then "media kit," then "championships media credentials."

Deadlines: Vary by event.

The process: Circulation and coverage of regular-season events are factors. Difficulty in obtaining credentials depends on the event. If you regularly cover a participating school, you should be in good shape.

Helpful hints: Again, local SIDs can be most helpful in the process. Men's ice hockey, baseball and wrestling are the most popular non-basketball championships. It's easier to get credentials after that, and most Division II and III events are pretty open.

Information about the credentialing process was supplied by media relations officials in each sport or league. Officials were asked to describe policies as they apply to daily newspapers, especially small and midsized papers, or those less likely to hold season-long "hard" credentials.

Deadlines are general and can change from year to year. It is best to make contact with an organization far ahead of time to avoid missing a deadline.

Keep in mind that not all credentials provide access to the event itself. Some credentials are limited to work rooms and interview areas.
