APSE joins Marriott VIP Program
APSE has become a member of the Marriott
Athletic VIP Card Program. The action was taken by the group's executive
committee when it met June 22 at The Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes Resort in Orlando.
The program will enable individual APSE
members to receive 25-50 percent discounts off the regular room rates at
Marriott and Renaissance Hotels, as well as at certain select service brands –
Courtyard (Marriott), Fairfield Inn, Residence Inn, Spring Hill Suites and TownePlace Suites. The card may be used for personal, as
well as business purposes.
Membership is gained only through the parent
organization — in this case APSE. Upon issuance, the card will remain in effect
for seven years. There is no annual charge. The cards are non-transferable and
are to be used for identification purposes only. It is not a credit card.
Members interested in joining should e-mail
Herb Stutz (herbstutz@commspeed.net)
with their full name, news organization for which they work and job title. On
Aug. 15, Stutz will electronically file a membership application with
Marriott's Sports Marketing Division. The membership cards will be mailed in
bulk to Stutz, who will mail them to individual members. New members can be
added quarterly.
Once you receive your card, reservations may
be made by calling 1-800-228-9290, or by visiting the Marriott.com website and
typing in "VIP" in the corporate/promotional rate box.
Dates announced for contest
The first two mandatory dates for the APSE
section contest have been selected.
They are Sunday, May 22 and Thursday, Feb. 24.
The final two mandatory dates will be chosen
on Jan. 1 and announced at that time.
Judging
for the 2005 APSE section and writing contests will take place March 4-8 at the
Renaissance WorldGate hotel in Orlando, Fla.
Minneapolis to host 2008 convention
Thirty years is a long time, but the
Associated Press Sports Editors will be returning to Minneapolis in 2008 for its national convention. The executive
committee, at its meeting June 22 in Orlando, unanimously voted to accept an invitation
from the Star Tribune to host the 35th annual convention at the Radisson Plaza
Hotel in downtown Minneapolis.
APSE held its sixth convention at the
Marquette Hotel in Minneapolis in 1979.
The '08 convention will be held June 25-28 at
the 360-room Radisson Plaza. The room rate will be $149.
Next year's convention will be held June 21-24
at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas ($134 room rate) with the Review-Journal serving as host.
The 2007 convention will be in St. Louis June
20-23 at the Renaissance Grand Hotel ($135), with the Post-Dispatch as host.

Ed Storin, an
integral part of APSE since its founding in 1974, will relinquish his post as secretary/treasurer
next year.
Storin, 75, announced at the national convention in
Orlando that he will step down at the conclusion of the 2006 national
convention in Las Vegas.
Storin, longtime sports editor of the Miami Herald,
retired in 1991 and later that year became APSE's
first full-time secretary/treasurer.
Aside from his duties that included convention
registration, collecting dues and keeping the books balanced, Storin was always available to APSE officers to provide sage counsel.
APSE president Glen Crevier
has appointed Tim Burke, deputy managing editor of the Palm Beach Post and a
past APSE president, to head a search committee to find a replacement for Storin.
